The Annual Meeting of the World Council is held each year for the world's religious leaders to come together on a regular basis to address critical issues. It provides a platform for government, business and religious leaders to undertake global issues, engaging its members towards a common goal of building reconciliation and healing in regions of conflict.
The first Council meeting was held on June 12-14, 2002 at the United Nations ESCAP facility in Bangkok, Thailand. Over 200 leaders from different faiths and traditions, business, government, civil society, academia and media participated in the official launch of the World Council of Religious Leaders following three-days of workshops. The basic goal was to develop a better understanding of the underlying causes for the religious tension in different parts of Asia and how the religions can deal with these causes. A substantial part of the program focused on issues of world tensions, the threat of nuclear war, global social and environmental problems. In addition, religious leaders signed and presented a Charter to United Nations that outlines key areas in which religious leaders can play an active role in reducing conflict and addressing the critical needs of humankind. |
